Nice Hotel Suffers from Bad Location

Okay, the title may be a bit misleading. It’s not the hotel’s fault that Belize City is probably the least desirable place to be in the entire country. But if you have to be there overnight, the Radisson is a nice place to stay.

Belize City is, in my opinion, one of the nastiest little cities I’ve been in. It’s dirty, it’s smelly, there are beggars and criminals virtually crawling over each other to accost tourists. We stayed there 2 nights before and 4 nights after a 7 night liveaboard dive trip in November 2005. The hotel itself is a lovely colonial structure with gorgeous warm mahogany plank floors and comfortable accomodations. There’s a nice pool (needed a bit of maintenance, but appeared to be clean) with a poolside bar. The “fitness center” was actually a tiny room with a few old stationary bikes and a few free weights. The room was clean and comfortable. The restaurant was decent, if overpriced.

Belize is a fascinating country and we mainly just used the hotel as a place to crash between tours. I do not suggest walking around Belize City on your own. There’s a reason that when the cruise ships arrive hundreds of buses are lined up to whisk them away from the city…the cruise line doesn’t want them to get mugged!
