Pointe-a-Calliere Museum (Museum of Archaeology and History)
Archaeology of a great city, and lesson in growth
I’ve been here a few times, to see the temporary exhibits, but the main exhibit is worth seeing more than once, to truly let it sink in. Basically, you have a few generations of buildings built on top of each other, and can see how a society changes and a city grows by looking at the way the space has been used and re-used.
They have a neat way of connecting the human experience by way of some multi-media interactive displays where you can ask questions of the people who lived there, and the whole musum starts with an introductory presentation on the history of the city of Montreal.
We caught a temporary exhibit about archaeology in three Roman/French cities that was well planned, well signed, and truly interesting. The FREE guided tours of these exhibits are worth planning your visit around, since you get a deeper view into what you’re looking at.
