The Peabody

The Peabody

quote:

Quack. Quack. Quack. If you know anything about the Peabody, you know about the mallard ducks that kick their webbed feet around the opulent fountain in its main lobby. Sound strange? The duck doesn’t stop here; every day at 11 a.m. the ducks come down in an elevator from the rooftop level, where they live in the duck palace (the rooftop of the Peabody offers a stunning view of Memphis). They queue up, march through the lobby and hop into the fountain, then they return to their palace each day at 5 p.m. The Peabody’s preference for whimsy is particularly evident during the holiday season, when it’s dolled up with greenery and live music. This five-star, 80-year-old hotel, smack in the middle of downtown Memphis, makes Southern hospitality its priority. With a friendly staff on hand and more couches in its lobby than a frat house, the hotel is elaborate without feeling exclusive. Its 465 rooms recently underwent a major renovation. They are beautifully appointed in warm tones of cream and gold, elegant but comfortable, and somewhat European in feel. Next door to the Peabody is the Peabody Place Mall, certifying the locale as the best way to splurge your way through Memphis.
