Dickerson Park Zoo

Your young companions will be thrilled with the exhibits in this mid-sized zoo; all their favorite creatures make their home at Dickerson Park Zoo. African elephants are the stars of the park, ever since Dickerson’s successful breeding program for this endangered species put the zoo on the map. The zoo’s directors have their hands full creating varied environments for these animals in Missouri’s challenging climate, and naturally the most convincing region represented here is the Missouri habitat, where river otters frolic and black bears share an enclosure with coyotes. The park’s petting zoo features a variety of kid-friendly creatures who gladly accept handouts you can buy from the coin operated dispensers, and there’s always a peacock or two roaming the paths, quick to dodge the youngsters attracted by their tail feathers. The Baby Animal Nursery also fascinates children, but the nearby Aldabra tortoises probably won’t hold their attention unless it’s feeding time. The Dickerson Park Zoo often hosts special events with free admission, and as an afternoon diversion it’s as attractive as a peacock’s plume.
