Ah, yes. Well, I ended up traveling to Beijing and environs at the same time there was a big International Women's conference in the city. The government had decreed that no Chinese citizens could get train tickets or anything into the area for the duration of the conference -- it was a heavy-handed effort to keep the crowds manageable for the foreigners. We didn't go to the conference, but we did do a lot of sightseeing, and yes, there were no Chinese tourists at any of the wonders we went to see.
Timing. It's all about timing. And repressive governments.
