Luckily for ogling shoppers, SoHo’s window dressers seem to be engaged in an ongoing show-down. Saunter around this visual feast of a neighborhood and you’d think they were all trying to one-up each other with their displays, each one more lavish and eye-catching than the next. Even with all this competition, however, the Rem Koolhaas-designed Prada boutique takes the cake. Undressed, flesh-coloured mannequins cluster in a white, cage-like vestibule hanging from a cathedral-high ceiling. Splashed across an entire side wall is a mural of mannequins frolicking – as much as stiff mannequins can – through a lush, tropical forest. And the clothes? Prada’s signature geek-chic outfits – boxy, proletariat jackets, cropped pants – are draped over a brigade of, yes, more mannequins staring coolly out the massive windows overlooking Broadway. If you don’t mind dropping a wad, then there’s no better spot in New York City to buy Prada; but even if you’re on a budget, the space is memorably worth checking and the looking’s free. And if you can’t resist at least one Prada goodie, go for a cool keychain or what the hell, nab one of their famous little nylon backpacks.
