Phantom Ranch
A Must do once-in-a-lifetime!
The Phantom Ranch is located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. While the Canyon is spectacular however you see it, the full experience requires hiking down to the bottom. We hiked down the South Kaibob Trail 5/2/07 and back up the Bright Angel Trail the next day. After months of training, they still seemed quite difficult, particularly for how steep they are (the South Kaibob much moreso). I did fall and break a bone in my hand half way down the hike, (got medical attention 5 days later) but I'm SO glad we did it. The night at the bottom, I was happy simply to be done walking for the day, but I was impressed with the comforts of the Phantom Ranch. The canteen is a friendly place to eat great meals (if you reserved ahead of time) or get lemonade or a beer and chat with other hikers from around the world. The bunk-houses were rustic (we did have a mouse) but fairly comfortable. Overall, it was a phenomenal experience!Reviewed on: June 20, 2007
