Fisherman's Wharf
San Francisco's Best Neighborhood
I love to visit Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. Tourists do appear to outnumber the residents in this area, and there does appear to be countless shops selling souvenirs, posters, trinkets (and lots of Ghiradhelli chocolate!). Nevertheless, it's an extremely fun and colorful place to visit. If you're looking to visit Alcatraz Island (or perhaps the smaller and charming communities of Sausalito and Tiburon just across the bay), there are daily ferries that will take you there from the pier. In pier 39 you can check out the aquarium, the carousel and the barking sea lions. Other well-known attractions of the Wharf include the maritime park with its historic ships; the Boudin Bakery for its clam chowder and sourdough bread, Ghirardelli Square for the chocolate, Cannery Row for the live entertainment...and so much more. My favorite attraction though is the Musee Mecanique on Pier 45, a unique and very cool old penny arcade museum with a vast collections of mechanically operated musical instruments and antique arcade machines arcade. Did I mention the Ghiradhelli chocolate?!Reviewed on: January 28, 2008
