Central Grocery

Central Grocery

quote:

A moofa what? It’s pronounced moo-fu-lotta, and Central Grocery is the place to get one. The muffaletta is a New Orleans requisite and starts with a piece of round, dense bread that’s bigger than Jay Leno’s head. The sandwich is filled with Italian meats interlaced with thin slices of cheese and topped with Central Grocery’s famous olive salad. Salty? A little. Greasy? A lot. Get one anyway; they’re to die for. The place is an Italian grocery store, so expect to order your sandwich among shelves of sauces and sausages. If you’re lucky, you can snag a seat at the very unfancy stools that line the wooden counter. It’s a fun time to talk with your neighbors about how wasted you got the night before on Bourbon Street. A warning you’ll get tired of hearing: Don’t order a whole muffaletta for yourself. Share one if your appetite’s big, or split a half if you’re a wuss.
