Pat's King of Steaks

Pat's King of Steaks

quote:

Pat’s claims to not only be the “King of Steaks” but to have actually invented the famous staple of the Philly diet. This was 1930, and the same family still owns and operates the stand in the South End. Just as there’s an art to the sandwich, there is an art to ordering it. If you want the grilled onions, simply blurt out “Wit” then specify your cheese. Don’t ask for Swiss or something crazy like that; your choices are provolone, American, Cheese Whiz, and pizza. Don’t be digging for change either; Pat’s like its customers to have their money ready. This brusque behavior might be an exception in the city of brotherly love, but one bite into a Pat’s steak and you’ll forget all about that scowl from the man behind the counter. If you’re not too engulfed in that all that meat and cheese goodness, take a moment to do a little people-watching. Tipsy college kids, mobsters, tourists, and the occasional celeb flock to Pat’s. Right across the street is the competition, Geno’s; try ‘em both and decide for yourself.
