Cable Cars

Cable Cars

quote:

“To be where little cable cars, climb halfway to the stars…” goes the song made famous by Tony Bennett. And yes, Cable Cars are the ultimate touristy experience. But you haven’t experienced San Francisco if you haven’t hopped on the lumbering , clanging wooden cars. Even locals jump on a Cable Car to get a quick ride out California Street or from Union Square downtown, up over the spine of Nob Hill, to the Embarcadero. For one of the best views in town, hop on an outside bench that faces the street. You’ll see a panorama of San Francisco neighborhoods and architecture moving by like a scroll. There are spiffily painted Victorian houses, slick office towers and downtown store windows displaying designer fashions. At some cross streets, vertigo-inspiring views of the Bay and bridges stretch far below. The best part of the Cable Car experience is the spirit they inspire, like the big grin on the man carrying an enormous bouquet of roses. He couldn’t squeeze on, not inside, not on another inch of outside platform. He shrugged, and raised his bouquet in salute to the riders. They clapped.
