Anniston is a town of 27,000 people located in northeastern Alabama, 57 miles east of Birmingham. t was established in the late nineteenth century around blast furnaces and textile mills.
One of the town’s major attractions is the Anniston Museum of Natural History. A little further along Museum Drive is the Berman Museum, which houses a large collection of artworks and weapons.
Nearby Talladega National Forest has numerous hiking trails, notably the 102-mile Pinhoti Trail. There is an observation tower at the top of Cheaha Mountain which, at 2,407 feet, is the highest point in the state. The 26-mile Talladega Scenic Drive is a good introduction to this beautiful area of Alabama. It commences near Heflin and ascends Cheaha Mountain, taking in some fine lookouts.
Anniston is connected to the outside world by train, bus and the highway system (it is just off I-20). The nearest airports are located at Birmingham and Atlanta.
