Ninilchik, AK Summary

This village of 680 people is located between Homer and Soldotna on the Kenai Peninsula, about 185 miles from Anchorage. It is a scenic area with good facilities—there are four state campgrounds and beaches where clams can be found. Russian descendants of those who worked for the Russian-American Company, which set up here in the 1820s, make up most of the population. The town was largely rebuilt following the 1964 earthquake although the old Russian Orthodox church here, which dates back to 1901, survived intact. It stands on a wide bluff that has a sensational view of Cook Inlet and the volcanic mountains across the water.
