Things to do with kids in DC?

So my husband is going to DC for work for a couple of months, and the kids and I are joining him for a month after school ends in 3 weeks.  I have been looking up some great places to visit in DC here on Gusto, but I can't really tell from the descriptions what places are really good for girls aged 6 and 2-1/2.  I will have the girls all day on weekdays while my husband is at work, so I'm looking for places that are user friendly for one parent with multiple children.  We may or may not have a rental car, so tips on public transportation are appreciated, too.  I understand DC is hot and humid in the summer, so "cool" (and I don't just mean "awesome") things are crucial.  I have never been to DC and I would love to have anyone with experience in DC give me some pointers.  Thank you all in advance!

For getting around DC, I'd definitely recommend using the Metro. It's fairly inexpensive, and it's safe and clean; it'll take you pretty much anywhere in the District, except Georgetown. And kids seem to enjoy the experience of riding it.

The Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History has exhibits and displays that will interest little kids, and the Air and Space Museum is another fun stop.

The National Zoo is a great place to take kids - the pandas are great! It's outdoors, but it opens at 6 a.m. (yikes!), so you could get up early and go around 9 and get out of there before it gets too hot.

Kids seem to like the Lincoln Memorial, too, mostly because it's so huge, I'd guess.

If your girls can be distracted with shopping, the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City is a big indoor mall just outside the District in Virginia, and you can take the Metro to it. Union Station is another shopping alternative. It can be a little crazy because it's busy all the time with commuter train and Metro train traffic, but it is indoors and cool.

I haven't been there, but I've heard that the National Aquarium in Baltimore is really nice, and that's not too far from Washington if you do have a rental car.

Thanks. Those are some fantastic ideas. I'm adding all of those things to my "To Do" list. Funny that you would mention Pentagon City--our apartment/hotel is practically next door to the Fashion Centre. Cool for me! Hey, do you happen to know of any websites where I can get info about getting around DC, maps, Metro lines, etc? Thanks!

The Web site for info on the Metro is www.wmata.com. It's pretty comprehensive and will probably answer a lot of your questions. It has a big map of all the Metro routes (which you can also pick up at Metro stations)  http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm

The Washington Post has a city guide that lists kid-friendly places and activities in and around Washington. You can find it here

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/cityguide/dc-kids-activities.html

Also, on Fridays the Post prints a Weekend section, and among its listings there are usually events and activities for kids, including special events at museums, theaters and parks, etc.
