Royal Exchange

Hugely popular after-work spot

This Financial District pub feels like it should be in the Northeast. There’s just something about the dark wood accents and suit-and-tie crowd that feels very un-California. I come here for after-work drinks, when Royal Exchange is jam packed with FiDi workers. If you can squeeze through the crowd, make your way to the back and try to get one of the semi-private wooden booths, where you’ll have a prime view of the frenetic happy hour shenanigans along with some much-needed elbow room. The pub grub is underwhelming, but the beer is icy cold and delicious and bartenders pour a fine pint of Guinness. Royal Exchange is also across the street from Embarcadero Center, so it’s ideal for a pre- or post-work drink.
