Few sights in the world rival northwestern Arizona’s Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, which lies just south of Utah and east of Nevada. The colorful, eroded gash in the Earth’s crust is 277 miles long and an average of 10 miles wide. At its deepest, it plunges 6,000 feet from rim to river. So deep is the sheerwalled canyon, where the rock strata reveal 250 million to 2 billion years of the Earth’s history, that getting to the bottom and back (on foot or by mule) takes two days. A trip through the canyon by river raft can take two weeks, and experienced backpackers can spend weeks in the more remote areas of the canyon.

The park’s elevation and climatic variations encompass multiple life zones, from the canyon-bottom desert of cacti and creosote bush to woodlands of pinyon pines and junipers and, at the higher elevations, conifer forests. As geologic forces lifted the Earth’s crust to form the high Colorado Plateau, the Colorado River slowly eroded its way downward through thousands of feet of rock. Split-twig figurines found in caves have dated human habitation to at least 2000 BC.

Havasu Canyon, a tributary of the Grand Canyon, is part of the Havasupai Indian Reservation. The first recorded view of the canyon was by a member of the 1540-42 expedition of Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado. In 1869, Major John Wesley Powell’s expedition down the Colorado River was the first to explore the canyon’s full length.

Today, an average of 5 million visitors annually keep the park crowded most of the year, making advance planning and reservations for campsites, lodging, mule trips, and backcountry permits essential. Visitor numbers are heaviest in spring, summer, and fall, and lowest from November through February, when winter conditions prevail. Day visitors are encouraged to arrive early due to limited parking.

The South Rim, more than 7,000 feet above sea level, is open year-round, 24 hours a day. Winter can bring snow, and even summer nights are cool. In the canyon, however, summertime temperatures can reach 120 F. The North Rim, at 8,000 feet, can receive snow almost any time of year, and heavy snow closes roads in winter; the weather is changeable in spring and fall. The North Rim is open from mid-May to mid-October.

There is a park entrance permit per vehicle which is good for seven days. There are information centers at both the South Rim and North Rim.

Commercial flights are available from Las Vegas, as well as from Phoenix, Flagstaff, and Grand Canyon Airport in Tusayan, south of the park. The South Rim’s Grand Canyon Village is 60 miles north of I-40 via State Route 64/US-180, and 80 miles northwest of Flagstaff via US-180.A variety of lodging choices and campground facilities are available for overnight stays.

"I went here a while back, but the memory has lasted and will continue to. My advice is to make sure you can spend enough time there, as I did not get to be there as long as I would have liked. Take some trails down, depending on your shape, try white water rafting, just do it all! It's worth it, bring a camera and take the family it is visited by a lot of people so be prepared for that too."

The Grand Canyon

"When I went to the Grand Canyon I stayed in Flagstaff, which is about 70 miles away. The drive there was so beautiful. However, be very careful of deer, insane drivers, and fire. One of the areas that I passed was easy to see where it was destroyed by wildfire. It took about an hour and a half to drive there.Outside the Grand Canyon there is a small town where you can get hotels, airplane rides, food, and park passes. If you are planning to take plane rides, donkey trips, or stay in a hotel BOOK EARLY. These places fill up fast. Even in Flagstaff. I got my hotel really late, 2 days before I arrived, and I got the last room. When I arrived in the town I saw a bunch of cars on the side of the road and people running across the street. BE CAREFUL OF THIS!! People don’t pay attention here. If they see something cars will stop in the middle of the road or while crossing or cross without looking, so just be careful. Anyway, on the side were three huge elk, or what I was told were elk. I quickly turned into the parking lot of a hotel and got out of my car. I got within 20 feet of them to take pictures and they didn’t seem to mind. From there I went to the park. I got my park pass form the ranger station for $20. It allows you to access the park for a week. Here they also give you a map of the park and list of the different activities that are taking place that day.Needless to say that my first view of the Grand Canyon was breathtaking. There is no way to put into words the majesty of the park. My only regret is that I wasn’t able to view the canyon from the bottom.I took the shuttle out to Hermits Rest stopping at several points along the way. The shuttle isn’t a tour bus, but it gives you information about the park and the different stops along the way. One of the advantages of getting there early is that there are less people trying to get on the bus. At one point I was at a stop completely by myself. This was by far the highlight of my trip; taking in the scenery with no people near was close to a religious experience. Around the park there are paths set up so you don’t have to take the bus, but you can walk along the rim. There is also maps set up so you know where you are and the distance between each bus stop. The park offers many great lectures and walks from experienced park rangers, who not only know their stuff but also obviously love what they do and where they are. The topics cover a variety of subjects and some offer opportunities to hike along the trails."

"This is my most amazing place that I have ever been. I rafted down the Colorado River, starting at Lee’s Ferry and ending close to Havasu. I was in the Grand for 18 beautiful days. Well it did rain just about every single one of those days but it was awesome!! I have never see so many different colors. Everyday there was something I’d never seen before. It is one of those experiences that you can never fully give justice. This is a place that I will go back to many times. Espically if someone wants to invite me on their permit!!!"

"The Grand Canyon is well exactly that, grand in the scale sense. Its huge when you’re standing on the rim and it just surrounds you. You can ever take trips into the canyon on horseback, or was it muleback? I know you can get helicopter rides from Vegas, but well, to truly experience it you need to get on your feet."

Magnificent

"Pictures do not do it justice. The Grand Canyon is absolutely unbelievable and incredibly larger than life. If you haven’t seen it in person, you haven’t seen it. Pictures could never capture the vastness and enormity that is the Grand Canyon. I was there in November. It was downright cold! But snow lingered on the rocks and in the trees and when the light hit it it was absolutely breathtaking. Photo ops galore! And check out the deer and elk that wander around the roads. My husband got some incredible pictures of the animals and plant life as well as the gorge itself. It is completely awe inspiring, and its sheer size makes one feel so small in comparison. Beautiful. A definite must-see."

"I don’t think any of us who have been here could really give it the credit it deserves. Words just could not describe this awe and amazement that you feel when you first view it. To imagine how it was even created. It is one of those you gotta see to believe at least once in your lifetime. I recommend going in the early spring or late fall before the snow or heat arrive. If you are an adventure seeker look into going white water rafting down the Colorado river (I have always thought about doing this) Or Rent a mule and go camping at the base."

Natural Wonder

Reviewed by jwcorney on January 22, 2007

"What can I say, it’s the Grand Canyon. The sight is amazing. The pictues you take make it look like you’re in a plane when you’re just standing along the rim. I traveled to the South Rim in January. The South Rim is very nice, with great views (I can’t compare with the other rims). One important note is that seeing the Grand Canyon in the winter is a bit of a gamble. Although you miss the crowds the temperature can fall into the negative numbers (as it was for me) and if you start getting significant snow you may not be able to see the canyon at all! Compounding the temperature difficulties, some stores are closed for the season, inside and outside the park, snow and icy roads can make driving difficult (I lost grip a number of times) and intentions to hike down into the canyon can be seriously dampened when you can’t feel your face or hands. Now I am talking about an extreme situation, but it happens to be the situation I was in. So if you have a good extended weather forecast by all means, skip the crowds, but if you are planning a trip a month out, take caution."
