Altus, AR Summary
Altus photo

The quiet town of Altus straddles Hwy 64 at the fringe of the Ozark National Forest, near the Arkansas River. Though the town of just 817 residents missed out on its chance for development when I-40 whizzed by, the area itself offers some impressive back-country scenery, with miles of hiking trails on former Osage and Cherokee hunting grounds. Just west of Altus near Charleston lies the Cherokee Prairie Natural Area, which during spring becomes carpeted in wildflowers and a very large expanse of unplowed tall-grass prairie.
