If you thought there was only one standard for spectacular hotel living in Los Angeles, you were wrong. There are actually two: the Standard Hotel in Downtown L.A., and the Standard Hollywood. Both properties are raising the bar for luxury hotels with their fabulously unique décor and amenities, and you can stay here without breaking the bank. The Standard Downtown L.A. is truly a standout in the pantheon of L.A. places to see and be seen. If Philippe Starck had designed sets for The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, they would look like the Standard’s lobby. Don’t miss the Standard’s jaw-dropping rooftop pool and cocktail lounge, one of the sexiest hot spots in town. It’s filled with animal-shaped topiaries, water beds and red Formica chairs. You might catch a screening of Steve McQueen’s Bullitt being projected onto the side of the skyscraper next door. Rooms at the Standard reflect everything modern design aspires to be: sparse, elegant, soothing and extremely livable. Rooms are bathed in subdued shades of gray, orange, yellow, and beige, and each piece of furniture looks as if it was plucked from a Danish designer’s private showroom. Staying at the Standard is nothing less than a revelation: If you can find a room, grab it.
