In a city obsessed with exteriors, Beauty Bar is exactly what it sounds like. When you walk in, you think it’s a regular bar, albeit tarted up with bubblegum ‘60s colors and styles. “There are some women,” you think, “sipping martinis and chatting loudly… but something’s different… ah yes, that’s it: They’re sipping martinis and chatting loudly while receiving pedicures.” Bring a sober friend who can help you back into your sandals without mussing your new color, and try not to inhale the varnish fumes, or you may become even more drunk. (Better yet, treat yourself to a temporary Henna tattoo rather than polish.) DJs spin each night starting at 10 p.m., usually drawing from classic rock, pop, funk, new wave, disco or ‘80s. Happy hour consists of a martini/manicure combo for about $10, and reservations are required for six or more guests. Beware private parties, and be prepared for crowds of squealing women; there is only one toilet. A bit kitschy, a bit wild and very vintage (check out those wacky hair dryers!) it’s also a multi-tasker’s dream, and something fun to do once in a while, even if it’s just to say you did it.
