Vegetarian, vegan, or veg-curious? This is health food for the geek-chic set. Sidle up to the bar for some wheat grass shots, every-flavor smoothies, soy-based coffee, or Chinese herbal tonics. Sit at indoor or outdoor booths and chow down on tofu steak sandwiches, vegetable chips, lactose-free burgers and omelettes, sugar-free muffins, and, of course, any kind of salad imaginable. If that list sounded taste-free to you, there are also fat-full, egg-full, and sugar-full alternatives available here as well, though the wait staff may look at you funny if you order them. Try some of the healthy stuff, just this once. You might even like it. Though it’s more of a restaurant than a café, the newsroom part of the name is accurate: The magazine and newspaper rack rivals any found at Barnes & Noble, and hanging televisions broadcast cable newscasts all day long. Located on Robertson Boulevard’s Restaurant Row across from the Ivy, the Newsroom Café also shares a parking structure with way-too-cool Storyopolis kids’ bookstore, and is mere steps from the best shopping this side of Melrose Avenue (many argue Robertson has supplanted Melrose as the new shopping mecca). Don’t go at lunchtime – you’ll never get a seat.

"The place is known for celebrity sighting, but I really do love the food here. It’s healthy and I love the smoothies. I prefer to sit outside and read. No better way to take advantage of Cali weather and food."

pretty good

health nut's rating:

"Health-conscious restaurants are not hard to come by in L.A., obviously, but Newsroom Café is definitely one of my favorites. There are the requisite tofu and soy products. The tofu steak sandwich is really good, and they have lots of different flavors of smoothies. The salads aren’t bad either. There’s indoor and outdoor dining – the restaurant is on Robertson Boulevard, which is really trendy and popular, so if you sit outside, there’s a chance you’ll see some celebrity walk by on her way to the Ivy or Kitson. It’s really crowded – either wait awhile or go during non-meal times."
