"Well, they don’t grow Wool here…HA! HA! This is a classic traditional Basque-style restaurant in the heart of cattle country. Located a few miles off the I-5, Wool Growers was recommended to us by a cattle rancher who we met at Jack’s Grill in Redding. The decor is simple: red-checkered table cloths with lots of country antiques on the walls. You’ll sit at a long picnic table (sits between 20-30 people) that you’ll likely share with some Los Banos locals. There are no menus; the waitress simply asks if you want chicken, beef, lamb or pork. Service begins with the waitress plunking down some chilled red wine (served in a soda bottle), followed by soup and salad served family style (in community bowls). Next came a bowl of lamb stew, a basket of rolls and bowl of beans. By the time the entrees came, we were already pretty stuffed, but we still ate the chicken and steaks because they were so delicious and juicy. As if that’s not enough, the waitress asked if we wanted second helpings of our dinner entrees. For dessert, we were served cantaloupe with a dixie cup of vanilla ice cream. It was a great way to end a fun dinner.
The Wool Growers Restaurant serves great comfort food in an interesting and unique setting. Cost per person was amazing. Total bill for 2 adults and 2 children: $57 including tip!"
