History, food and fun are all within easy walking distance. Father Serra established the first mission here more than 225 years ago; Kit Carson helped to raise the first American flag in 1846. Now there are 37 restaurants and entertainment is abundant with artisans, dancers, galleries, hotels, mariachis, professional theatre and shops. Most restaurants and shops accept major credit cards. You can access this area from Interstate-5 by taking the Old Town Avenue exit, driving east and turning left on San Diego Avenue.

"Have you ever wondered what a city was like back in the 1800s? If so, when you visit San Diego, be sure to visit Old Town; located close to the downtown area. Here they try to recreate what it was like in this first Spanish settlement. They have many shops that you can go through that carries mainly souvenirs from the area. The largest store being the Bazaar Del Mundo where you will find very colorful baskets and pottery made in Mexico. This is an interesting place to take pictures. You can also walk through La Casa De Estudillo which is an adobe house built in 1827 for the commander of the presidio. It is rumored that the ghost of one of the priests that lived there haunts the place. If you want to visit a real haunted house, be sure to visit the Whaley House, a couple blocks away. It is said to be one of the most haunted houses in the United States. During a haunted tour that my son and I took, he got a very interesting picture that really makes you wonder. The best time to visit is in the evening when the crowds are limited to those on an exclusive tour. Just down the road from the Whaley House is El Campo Santo Cemetery; this is one of the original cemeteries for Old Town. If you look at the sidewalk and on the street, you will see little pieces of metal the size of a fifty cent piece, these are grave markers. They didn't move the cemetery, but instead they paved right over the top of it. Some people have noticed that if you park your car near them, things will go wrong with the car; be it a flat tire or engines that won't turn over. Apart from the shopping and ghost hunting, there are many authentic Mexican restaurants. You can even find women making tortillas right on the street. This is a fun place to spend a few hours at; come back in the evening for a whole different atmosphere."

A fantastic place to go

"I really like the sightseeing here. There are some really interesting galleries if you get a chance to browse through any of them. Any resturant is really good to eat at. Presio Park and the Sherrif’s Museum are also other points of interest. Whether you are a tourist viting for a short time, or a local resident who’s been living here a long time, this is a terrific place to go."

Yummy Mexican restaurants!

"This is a great place to go to eat Mexican Food. It’s all really good, and there are plenty of dining options! Just walk around, and go to the first place you find, and it will probably be delicious! It can get busy on Friday and Saturday nights, but there are enough restaurants that you usually can get a table without waiting too long. It’s fun to walk around in the little shops, a lot of which have Mexican-themed stuff. There are some historical sites, and I know they have a “ghost tour” of the haunted places, but I haven’t heard anything about it. A great place for dinner, though, and to spend an evening!"

"I love Old Town. As a kid Old Town was a place we went on field trips. As an adult, Old Town is the place I go to eat, to sightsee, and to walk around. There are many great restaurants in Old Town, most of them being Mexican restaurants. I haven’t been to one I haven’t liked. There is a little theater there where you can take in a live performance. There are numerous historical sights and parks. This is a great place to spend the day. If you’re going to San Diego, plan a day in Old Town. You won’t be disappointed."
