Van guarding a southern movement, The Guild is breaking new ground in an area dubbed SOCO (South of Commercial), and laying its roots in a primarily industrial section of town. The Guild is a creative place to lounge, eat and drink. The experience includes a viewing window into an actual design/fabrication studio along with all the sparks for a good show. Enjoy eclectic contemporary cuisine with worldly spices beautifully paired with a generous selection of international boutique wines. The progressive menu is matched perfectly with the industrial designed and detailed environment.

Some people just won't get it....

"How can you hate this place??? Unless of course, you are more the Cheese Cake Factory type. In a world of cookie-cutter corporate restaurants, you have to love a bunch of people that completely go out on a limb and create something really artsy and cool in an area that most people are still afraid of. It takes creative visionaries like that to really redevelop neighborhoods. Eating at the Guild feels like an adventure to me. Something completely unlike anything else in San Diego. I Love the gallery-like setting and the kicked up comfort food. I raise my glass to the groundbreaking Guild Restaurant- with respect. The rest of you should stick to more safe and obvious destinations in Mission Valley. For the record, our waiter mentioned that the chef at The Guild will make her National TV debut on the Food Network Challenge next Sunday competing in the Ultimate Mac and Cheese Challenge- so apparently her food can't be too bad! He also noted that they were throwing a viewing party on Monday Sept 10th from 6-8 with wine and free Mac and Cheese. I'm there!"

The Guilt, Don't believe the hype.

foodie411's rating:

"Horrible service, over rated, over priced, seedy area, again, over priced. They should call themselves "The Guilt".For those who feed the hype and think this place is "ultra hip", then you truly deserve this place. But for those who were born with good taste, and value the full dining experience (location, ambiance, food, and especially service), then there are other great places in SD to try."

Security, Please!

Reviewed by tonybaccucci on March 21, 2007

tonybaccucci's rating:

"The Guild is located on the east side of San Diego, aka Barrio Logan. The neighborhood is definitely run-down and NOT a safe place to leave your vehicle. Once inside, the atmosphere is modern and pleasant. However, my girlfriend and I were really turned-off by the climate in The Guild. A server indicated that there is no heating or air-conditioning in the building (COLD). Finally, the tapas were severed in an uncoordinated fashion. We order the Greek Salad and Kobe Beef Sliders which to our surprise was disgusting and over seasoned. The Greek Salad was topped with a green gross sludge and the Kobe Beef Sliders were severed cold and very raw. My final opinion of this place is…Stay away! "

"I visited the Guild Restaurant after hearing all the hype. Hype is all this place has. The food is overpriced and managebly edible. There were people there but they were basically the friends of the owners and the staff. If they are in the "know" then please lose my number. The portions are ridiculous and there is an overuse of foam. Yuck. Not to mention the location of this place. Completely dangerous and scary. We are never going back. Never mind the fact that oddly enough the photos from some reviewers look professional and staged. Oh yeah, and have also seen the same photos on other sites. So unless the reviewers have the same shots, it looks to be the work of the same person, or their PR firm. The only good thing? The design, I guess."

Ultra Chic for Those in the "Know"

Reviewed by superfoodie on March 17, 2007

superfoodie's rating:

"The Guild is absolutely amazing! Who would have thought that an ultra chic place like this would spring up in the middle of Barrio Logan. That's what makes it so great though. The food is unbelievably tasty and the atmosphere is like something out of New York or LA. Definitely not another SD tourist destination. This is a place for those in the "know" and you can tell when you get there. SD's elite and ultra chic flock to The Guild. With a top notch wine list and food that tastes and looks like a work of art, it's easy to see why. I love underground places off the beaten path and this is an amazing one that's definitely one of a kind in SD!"

Come prepared to be impressed!

"The Guild Restaurant + Lounge is a hot new dining destination in East Downtown, San Diego. The creation of co-owner Paul Basile of Basile Studio (www.basilestudio.com), the restaurant seamlessly melds art and design with food for an unforgettable and unique experience. Enjoy views of the adjoining Basile Studio work-space while you dine on Mahi fish tacos served on an architectural serving platter designed and fabricated on-site specificially for the dish. The contemporary menu consists of world-inspired small plates. Enjoy items such as the Kobe Beef Sliders and Black Mussels with Lemongrass and Basil and wash it down with one of their signature Soju Martinis like the Jade Kiss made with cucumber and mint."
