The Westin St. Francis is the last survivor of turn-of-the-century San Francisco. This historic icon, dating back to 1904, was named to Conde Nast Travelers’ Gold List. Guests will find a cable car stop right outside the door. From there it’s only a short ride on the creaking tracks to Fisherman’s Wharf, North Beach, and Chinatown, or you can simply shop until you drop in Union Square’s high-end boutiques and department stores. The magnificent lobby of the hotel awes guests with marble columns, gilded ceilings, and crystal chandeliers. The hotel is also home to the famed Compass Rose lounge, where theatergoers and bon vivants began meeting 100 years ago “under the clock” for drinks. Even today, locals, vacationers, theatergoers, and bon vivants still meet there before journeying out to the city. In addition, theatergoers take advantage of the hotel’s pre-theater, prix fixe menu served in the clubby Oak Room, a perfect start to the evening. Guests rooms include the Westin’s patented Heavenly Beds of foot-thick pillowtop mattresses, down comforters, fancy duvets, and enough pillows for a pillow fight before a perfect night’s sleep. Rooms in the tower come complete with the Heavenly Baths, consisting of dual showerheads with multiple spray options, velour bathrobes, oversized Brazilian combed-cotton bath sheets, and spa bath products. The Westin’s décor, featuring beautiful chandeliers, ornate woodwork, period-style furniture, and elaborate drapes, completes the elegant ambiance. For vacationers traveling to San Francisco for shopping or business, or just to take in the attractions, the Westin St. Francis offers luxurious accommodations in a prime location. Don’t forget to ride to the top of the hotel in one of the glass elevators, which give the perfect view of San Francisco 32 floors up.

A Marvelous Place...

Reviewed by sassylaurie on December 11, 2006

sassylaurie's rating:

"Any time of the year, this place is great to visit. Great rooms, fantastic service. I went there at Christmas time a couple of years back. It was around a Swiss Holiday, and the Swiss flag was raised outside if you can believe that. They raise a flag for every country’s Holiday, if the service and accomadations aren’t good enough. Anways, near the main lobby, tucked away in a far corner of the room, was this humugous Gingerbed house and tiny villiage. The pieces were so intricately put together with care. It was a vision for for the young and the old. My time there was priceless. The very best part was riding the elevator to the top of the building and getting a splendid view of the city."

Great Hotel on Union Square

Reviewed by JustonParker on November 29, 2006

JustonParker's rating:

"The new building has larger rooms and the old has the history. This is a great place to see old meet new and watch history go by. Get your dollars cleaned and meet me under the clock at the St. Francis."
