As you approach the island, the imposing figure that is Alcatraz grows increasingly ominous. “The Rock” is an appropriate moniker, given the prison’s cold, hard, and unforgiving exterior. Now a national park, the entire island is yours to explore. The tour offers the freedom to see what you want at your own pace. The audio tour is worth the extra money, providing sounds and stories that bring the inmates’ voices inside your head. Former prison guards also narrate, pointing out cells of famous inmates including Al Capone and the Birdman. When the sounds of a riot laced with gunfire flood your ears, don’t be surprised to find yourself clutching your purse a little tighter. Alcatraz is an excellent choice for a piece of American culture; it’s a building alive with history. Just be glad you can leave on the next ferry.

Take The Jail tour, you will learn a lot

"Once you get on the Island, depending on what tour you are on, sometimes they tell you the story of the guy that escaped from ALcatraz. They said there’s one person that to this day, they haven’ found his body. They used to let him swim for hours at a time in the freezing cold water surrounding alcatraz. Then one day he escaped, and the tour legend has it that it was possible for him to have made it to land because of all the time he spent preparing for himself in the frezzing cold water. People think he adjusted to it. The cells themselves on the island, are pretty creepy looking. the prison guard staff lets you see inside of the real cells, and it just looks so sad. The staff tells some really good, really informative stories, so if you ever get to take this tour, you should. I came away from the experience with a different thought about jails altogether. Seeing cells in person is really quite different from seeing them on a film."

"This is definitely a cool thing to do. The history is amazing- last time I went, there was a guy at the wharf who used to be an inmate there, who had written a book. Awesome! There are also beautiful views from the island into the city. Do book a few days in advance if you know you want to go- I tried to take a friend in March last year, and there weren’t any tickets available for 3 days! "

"To know that there is so much history on this little island the call Alcatraz. Take a boat ride over and see what it is all about. Imagine how those guys who escaped must have felt…what really happened on this island?"

"Pretty neat attraction in San Francisco. Of course you’ve heard a lot about it and you’ve probably seen the movie too. Takes awhile to do this attraction because you have to take the ferry out there and back, but there is a lot of history there and it’s cool to go through."

Alcatraz review

"This was not on my list of top San Fran attractions, but my husband was dying to see it, so we made an afternoon of it. It’s a little creepy looking, but turned out to be quite interesting, and I was very glad we went. My daughters’ favorite part, however, was the ferry ride over there; they really didn’t seem too impressed with the prison itself, but they’re too young to know who some of the famous inmates are. I do think the stories of famous prisoners like Al Capone are pretty fascinating, and the audio tour brings some people to life, which was pretty neat. I wasn’t thrilled at first, but now I’m definitely happy we went."
