Conventional wisdom holds that this monument is shaped like a fire-hose nozzle. It is not, at least not by design. The tower is the gift of Lilly Hitchcock Coit, an eccentric heiress who managed to stand out in a city full of them. Lillys particular passion was for the San Francisco Fire Department. So when the money she left in her will for The Citys beautification was used to construct the art deco tower on Telegraph Hill in 1932, people made assumptions. The view from here is one of the most impressive in San Francisco, taking in the Bay, two bridges, and the Marin Headlands. Inside, the first floor is decorated with excellent murals, commissioned by the WPA in 1933, depicting San Francisco history. Tickets:$3.75 Adult; $1.50 Child (6-12)/(64 and up); cash only

Nice views!

"The walk up the hill is nice, and the views from the hill are great! But like reewins said, views anywhere in San Francisco are pretty much always great! But there aren’t as many where you can easily go up in a buildling and look out. There are some murals inside the tower on from the 1930s, commissioned by the Works Progress Administration, which is cool. The elevator only costs a few dollars, and you have 360 degree view at the top. & there’s a smashed penny machine in the giftshop, if you have a collection (what?! They’re great, cheap souvenirs"

Any hill is just as good

"I have to say I wasn’t overly impressed with the tower. Given all the hills in San Francisco, it seems like you can get a similar view in plenty of other locations. The exercise getting to the tower, though, served me well. It is steep and not for anyone who has a hard time walking."
