Tourists flock to the historic Fisherman’s Wharf for its great views, numerous seafood restaurants and plentiful shopping options. You can also take a cruise of the Bay from here, and if you come really early in the morning you might see some actual fishermen, but for the most part, Fisherman’s Wharf is all about capturing tourists’ attention (and their dollars). Still, it’s a San Francisco institution that you should visit at least once. Be sure to stop by Pier 39, where you’ll see some of the hundreds of sea lions that have taken up residence here.

I Love San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf!

"Recently spent some time in San Francisco and kept Fisherman’s Wharf as our home base. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express which was walking distance to the Wharf. Lots of souvenier shops, restaurants and great scenery! The sea lions are fun to watch, in fact we spent over an hour just watching them frollick and bark in the sun. I absolutely loved all the seafood available including an excellent seafood restaurant called Scoma’s. Highly recommended! There’s a great arcade on Pier 39 that the kid’s loved –couldn’t get them to leave -- and a merry-go-round nearby. Museums, a quick jaunt to Alcatraz, delicious clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls…this place has it all!"

San Francisco's Best Neighborhood

"I love to visit Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. Tourists do appear to outnumber the residents in this area, and there does appear to be countless shops selling souvenirs, posters, trinkets (and lots of Ghiradhelli chocolate!). Nevertheless, it's an extremely fun and colorful place to visit. If you're looking to visit Alcatraz Island (or perhaps the smaller and charming communities of Sausalito and Tiburon just across the bay), there are daily ferries that will take you there from the pier. In pier 39 you can check out the aquarium, the carousel and the barking sea lions. Other well-known attractions of the Wharf include the maritime park with its historic ships; the Boudin Bakery for its clam chowder and sourdough bread, Ghirardelli Square for the chocolate, Cannery Row for the live entertainment...and so much more. My favorite attraction though is the Musee Mecanique on Pier 45, a unique and very cool old penny arcade museum with a vast collections of mechanically operated musical instruments and antique arcade machines arcade. Did I mention the Ghiradhelli chocolate?!"

Had a blast in Fisherman's Wharf!

"I came up to San Francisco to visit some friends last week and had an awesome time. I'd been there in the past but didn't get a chance to fully explore the city. Though North Beach was probably my favorite neighborhood, I have to say I really enjoyed hanging out down in Fisherman's Wharf. I thought it would be like what Tim's Square is to New York but it wasn't at all. For one thing, it's gorgeous, with Alcatraz right there across the bay. But what really surprised me was how many cool museums there are. The wax museum was much more interesting than I expected...amazing how realistic those likenesses are! Also, this really interesting place called the Musee Mecanique at pier 45 is a must see. It's like an old-time penny arcade with antique games and thing. Very cool! Also; the U.S.S Pampanito, a World War II submarine museum and memorial is a must see for anyone interested in US history or old ships. We took a cable car right over the hill to Union Square where we saw Jersey Boys, which I absolutely loved. Looking forward to exploring SOMA and the Mission District on my next trip!"

Touristy, but you're a tourist! So go!

"Fisherman’s wharf does have a lot of touristy stuff, and that’s exactly why, if you’re a tourist in SF, you should go! You can see the smelly sea lions, get boats to Alcatraz or around the bay, eat delicious fish and clam chowder, go to the Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum (I loved this place and begged to go there all the time when I was little!), buy tacky figurines made out of shells, go to an aquarium, and of course see the Bushman and other awesome street performers! There’s also a free museum of coin-operated machines that is pretty cool on the pier. So much to do! & it’s a short walk to the cable cars!"

Three Exclamations and a Bushman story for the Wharf

Reviewed by sassylaurie on December 20, 2006

sassylaurie's rating:

"Fisherman’s Wharf is one of San Francisco’s most popular tourist destinations. The Wharf is part of a long coast side, rows of seafood restaurants, street vendors, souvenir stores, and beautiful scenic ocean view. If you are a Coke or Pepsi drinker like me, the drink goes down real smoothly with carb. The part I liked the best this time was seeing the Bushman. What would San Francisco be without this man? I spotted him following a tourist. When she turned around he yelled “boo!” She gave him a look that kills, then sauntered off into the distance. Us spectators stood by laughing hysterically at her folly. Not everyone likes the Bushman, but he is definately one of the main attractions for the Wharf."

A few reasons

Reviewed by ajones on March 31, 2006

"Fishermans Wharf is a tourist trap with overpriced t-shirt shops and bad restaurants. I am here to give you a few good reasons to go there and it will take you less than an hour. If you are there during dungeness crab season, grab on off the street and wash it down with an Anchorsteam (SF’s own brew) take a peek at the sea lions and find a spot where the “bush man” hangs. This is truly the best part of Fishermans Wharf. A man hangs out (and has been for years) by a plant and covers himself with a huge branch. When hordes of tourist walk by he scares the bejezus out of them. People watch and laugh hysterically. It’s a riot and in my opinion a good enough reason to visit this tourist mecca."
