The Golden Gate Bridge is San Francisco’s most famous icon. People around the world recognize the image of its two rust-red towers joined by suspended cables that support the road below. It joins the headlands of Marin County with San Francisco, and crosses the opening into San Francisco Bay. The best time of the day to cross Golden Gate Bridge is at sunset when the brilliant orb drops into the Pacific Ocean. The sun is setting not only on this scene, but also on all of North America. You can walk across the 1.7-mile span on its south side. You’ll share the walk with bicycles, and it can get quite busy on weekends. It can also be cold and windy, so bring a sweater. There are parking lots and vista points on both the Marin and San Francisco sides. The Golden Gate Bridge was considered such a potent symbol of America that it was one of the sites guarded by security forces after 9/11.

A site so amazing, it'll take your breathe away.

"I have walked across this bridge before, and I must say, the best time to cross it, is around sunset. Here’s my take on why. The city lights are just starting to glow, and as the sun gets farther away, the pretty lights of the city light up for everyone’s entertainment. I like the dark orangish color of this bridge, too. I don’t know why they call it gold, because as everyone knows, it is not gold in the least. My grandfather actually helped build this bridge back when he was in the military, so it has a pretty imporant personal imprtance for me. He is long gone, but I will always have the bridge, as well as other nice reminders to think of him by. At the other side of the bridge you can relax, and unwind off to the side. There is also other scenic things on that side, too, after the view of the bridge. It’s quite a magnificent structure, and took many man hours to build. If you can, stop by and see it some time. You will not be dissapointed."

Cool bridge

"It really isn’t golden at all- it’s orange! Not even close to gold! That’s what I think about every time I see it! It really is a cool bridge, and such an iconic representation of SF! If you don’t have time to walk across, there is a little area right when you get to the other side of the bridge, away from SF, where you can park and take pictures. Great views of the city, too!"

Gorgeous bridge

"Yes, it’s a tourist magnet. But it’s also one of the most beautiful bridges in the world, and the views of it and from it are incredible. Best way to see it? Park down in the Marina and take a long walk along Crissy Field up to the bridge. Or, bike across it and down to Sausalito. Don’t be dismayed if the bridge is shrouded in fog. Just walk (or bike) to the Marin side and – almost always – it’ll be bright and sunny over there. Seeing the city covered in a blanket of fog with the tops of skyscrapers peeping through is also pretty incredible."

"The Golden Gate Bridge provides the traveler with so many inspiring views from throughout the city that it begs to get up close with it. I’ve found the best way to experience it is to bike across the bridge and ride the hill at breackneck speed into downtown Sausalito for a well deserved cold beer."
