The Golden Gate Bridge is San Francisco’s most famous icon. People around the world recognize the image of its two rust-red towers joined by suspended cables that support the road below. It joins the headlands of Marin County with San Francisco, and crosses the opening into San Francisco Bay. The best time of the day to cross Golden Gate Bridge is at sunset when the brilliant orb drops into the Pacific Ocean. The sun is setting not only on this scene, but also on all of North America. You can walk across the 1.7-mile span on its south side. You’ll share the walk with bicycles, and it can get quite busy on weekends. It can also be cold and windy, so bring a sweater. There are parking lots and vista points on both the Marin and San Francisco sides. The Golden Gate Bridge was considered such a potent symbol of America that it was one of the sites guarded by security forces after 9/11.
