Summary of Grace Cathedral
Grace Cathedral
1100 California St
San Francisco, CA 94108
415-749-6300
Sitting high atop San Francisco’s Nob Hill, overlooking the Bay and the city below, Grace Cathedral is an interesting combination of traditional French Gothic architecture and modern angular art and furnishings. Completed in 1964, it is the latest of several churches on this site, the most noteworthy predecessor having been destroyed in the earthquake and subsequent fire of 1906. The current cathedral is, in addition to being an active Episcopalian parish, the site of numerous community concerts, which showcase the cathedral’s 44-bell carillon, its excellent pipe organ, and one of the best men and boy cathedral choirs in the United States. The cathedral is noted for its Ghiberti “Gates of Paradise” doors, its AIDS-themed Chapel altarpiece designed by modern artist Keith Haring, and varied collection of stained glass windows. The stunning and unique church has become a pilgrimage destination for churchgoers and art-lovers from around the world.
