This San Francisco landmark features some of Fishermans Wharfs best shopping and attractions. Ride the carousel or watch the sea lions. There are more than 25 one-of-a-kind gift stores that carry automobile, Hollywood, and rock n roll memorabilia, as well as flags of the world, Russian dolls, collectible knives, hammocks, kites, and more. But that’s is not all. You will find more than 30 more stores to shop for clothing, jewelry and toys. It is a great place to pick up high-end San Francisco souvenirs. Credit card acceptance varies by store. Pier 39 is a magnet for locals and tourists for many reasons, including their nearly year-round calendar of special attractions for the whole family like the Tulipmania tulip festival held in late February on both levels of pier 39.

Crowded Zoo, but a Must See

"Everyone who visits San Francisco should visit Pier 39. It is a tourist attraction that needs to be experienced, once. Due to the vast number of tourists, it gets crowded. The restaurants are decent (visit Bubba Gump's). There are attractions (an acquarium) and some other junk. Enjoy "

"PIER 39 is a wonderful place to visit, especially if you hop on the trolly at the top of Market Street, and ride all the way down. There's lots to see & do, even if you don't spend a dime! However a stop at the Ghirardelli chocolate factory is a must!"

Kitschy, but fun!

"Yes, Pier 39 is touristy. But the whole Fisherman’s Wharf area is worth a visit if you’re new to San Francisco and not pressed for time, so you might as well go! The smelly sea lions are fun to watch, you can get tacky souvenirs galore (I don’t know what the overview page was talking about- “high-end”!! I think not!), and Ghiradelli chocolate! Very important, and the best souvenir from SF! Plus all the cool street performers- men who walk and lay on crushed glass, the silver statue people, musicians, magicians… fun to watch! Plus you can get tours of the bay or to Alcatraz here, it’s close to a lot of other stuff, and it’s easy to get parking ($10-15 a day in some of the earlier piers!)."

"This place has been built to take tourist dollars. There are more interesting places to eat and shop elsewhere in the city. The sea lions and their story of how they migrated to the pier is interesting but again, there are better things to do in the city."

Just being here will keep you entertained...

"Sometimes this place can be so crowded such as the day we came here for the Carnivale festival. We started out as a cohesive group wandering the carnivale, then going over to the Pier to listen to the band called “the cheeseballs” which is a very cool 80s band out here. Next, some people headed over to coffee, some people went over to a bread shop, and I almost got left by myself to go to Chocolate Heaven (on earth) because there weren’t any chocolate lovers with us left on this side of the planet. That was such a bummer. For the most part it was hard to walk aroudn that day. But normally you come here, it’s a fair crowd, really fun people watching entertainment, over 25 vendor shops to keep your eyes and taste buds alive, and a much needed break from your daily life. That is typical of what you might want to accomplish when touring SF, Ca. "
