This venue is owned and operated by a collective of dedicated film lovers. The repertory schedule offers an eclectic selection of films, but it is the laid-back ambiance of the place itself that is the real attraction. It features sofa-seating in a bare bones auditorium that is simultaneously primitive and homey. The snack bar has a nice selection of organic and decadent treats and offers yeast, in addition to salt and parmesan, as a popcorn topper. Admission: USD6.50 adults; USD3 seniors/children, USD4.50 before 2p daily; cash only.

"Foget the multiplex monstrosities – the Red vic is the place to go. The box office only opens about a half hour before each show."

A San Francisco original

Reviewed by Anonymous on June 30, 2006

"The Red Vic is easily the best place to see a movie in San Francisco and, if you ask me, the whole world. The calendar is packed with cult and indie flicks, along with second runs of big blockbusters sprinkled in (everyone needs their brain candy). The moviehouse itself is filled with church pews instead of seats, and you can get popcorn sprinkled with wheat germ or organic, vegan baked treats. Red Vic is also a co-op, so it’s employee owned. This means the people who work there actually care about keeping the Red Vic alive and kicking, which always translates to better service."

Funky movie fun

"This place is a total SF original You have the church pew seating, the wheat germ covered popcorn, the eclectic movie mix, and soon you will be able to drink a beer or wine in the theater One of my favorite regular movies to show here is Saturday Night Fever. I’ve been when half of the audience gets up a boogies during some of the dance scenes. The movies only show for a couple of days, so there is alway a great choice of movies to see at any given time."
