Not as famous, perhaps, as the Golden Gate Bridge connecting The City with Marin County to the north, the double-decker San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is no less impressive as an engineering feat. Its also just as lovely in its own way, especially at night, when miles of lights outline its graceful shape and the steel cable spun like a spider web along its length. Opened for business in 1936 with a then-astronomical price tag of $70 million, the part suspension, part cantilever, part tunnel, and part truss structure, is anchored by a concrete island descending 220 feet below the Bay. Another even more impressive feat of its engineering history is that after part of the span tumbled in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, it was repaired and opened again for traffic within a month, safer than ever.Toll: $2 (westbound only)

What can you say about a bridge?!

"Well, I don’t know that anyone should make a special trip to see this, but when you drive over the bridge and get your first view of San Francisco, it’s pretty beautiful! Especially at sundown! I always take this bridge to get to SF, since I live in the central valley. If you don’t go during morning or evening rush hours, the traffic usually isn’t bad, either!"

Awesome night view

"This bridge looks so wondrous at night. It’s got pretty little intricate lights wrapped through it’s top cables, so at night when the lights go down, the bridge lights up S.F. in wonder. it’s part truss, part cable, and part tunnel. it is anchored miraculously down by a concrete island. They are still re-constructing it, and giving it a big retrofit right now. It’s been pretty reliable at getting people from other parts of the Bay Area to S.F. and back. If you’re ever viting S.F. try to go across this bridge at night. It’s magnificent!"
