A neighborhood where rainbow flags wave with pride, the Castro is the center of San Francisco’s gay community. Tourists come to this section of the city to gawk at what locals consider a part of the culture. San Francisco’s Pride Celebration and Parade, the SF Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, and the SF Dyke March are all held here. Not to mention, the Castro is the place to be on Halloween. The streets are closed off, and you’ll see costumes more extravagant than Joseph and his Technicolor Dream Coat could have ever imagined. Wigs, stilts, and some of the most convincing drag queens you’ve ever seen line the streets this night for a mind-blowing show. The Castro also happens to be one of the most beautiful areas of the city; rents are steeper than the streets, and funky boutiques, fabulous restaurants, and great nightlife fill the neighborhood. A visit here will make you feel immersed in the culture of this beautiful and diverse city; you’ll forget about that trip to Fisherman’s Wharf in no time.

"If you’ve ever been on this street on Halloween, it is just chuck full of people. I don’t know how so many people get in one place and not knock each other down, but that secret is deep within everyone who comes here. It can definately be a real cattle ranch of people at times. The streets here are always so colorful, and you will see some rainbow parenphenalia from the people that live there. It doesn’t matter what denomination you are on halloween. Everyone hangs out together on thsi street, and all have a great time. Another time a year this street gets really crowded is at the gay Pride parade. People come from all over the US to celebrate gay pride, and it’s not just gay people who celebrate, it;s pretty much whoever would like to is more than welcome to join in the festivities. San Francisco is the known melting pot fo the world, and it’s a happy place to be in the best or worst of times, especially when you visit Castro Street."
