With a name that translates into “beautiful refuge,” you would expect a lot from Ana Mandara – and it does deliver. Inspired by an ancient love story, Ana Mandara’s environment and food evoke beauty and romance. Nestled away in the historic area of Ghirardelli Square, this “refuge” is ornamented with bamboo, pottery and other Asian-esque flair, and the dining room is decorated like a world bazaar and is suitable for mid-sized parties (private rooms are available as well). The ambitious Vietnamese fare is fused with modern panache in beautifully presented dishes such as miso-honey butterfish and anise-rubbed rack of lamb. The upstairs Cham Bar boasts specialty cocktails that you can enjoy while listening to live music. With a decent balance of food (three words: mango spring rolls) and environment, Ana Mandara is a love story worth reading.

yummy food in an exotic locale

starry's rating:

"I went to Ana Mandara last night for the last day of SF’s Dine About Town (only in January!) $31.95 for a three course meal. The inside of the restaurant is styled with palm trees and architecture so that you feel like you are sitting outside a posh nightclub. The food was pretty good but not earthshattering. For my first course I had the crispy lobster ravioli, which was nicely done with a good dipping/dripping sauce. Second course was the mekong basa – a filet of fish, lightly floured and placed over a small pile of greens, surrounded by fish sauce (smells like pad thai). Not much art to the plating. Third course was the meyer lemon mousse, which I have to say was the best of everything I tried there. It’s served in a martini glass with a sprig of mint and some preserved slivers of lemon. Yum. I do like meyer lemon anything, so it’s not too difficult to make me happy. It does shake like jello. Service was decent though slow, and waiters/helpers simply slid our plates onto the table rather than carefully serving and placing them – perhaps because we had a group (?) Water was refilled failrly quickly. I’d go back again but wouldn’t say Ana Mandara is worth a special drive up to the city."
