This tiny, two-level restaurant specializes in the namesake crudo – hunks of raw fish paired with ingredients like sea salt, fresh apples and tangerine oil. But cooked dishes – such as mussels marinated in San Francisco’s own Anchor Steam beer and seared dayboat scallops served with fat tangerine slices – are equally impressive. The first floor is dominated by a steel-topped bar lined with a few stools. A stairway leads to a buttermilk-hued loft dining room jampacked with two tops. But the couples and small groups huddled around tables don’t seem to mind the cramped quarters – they’re too busy digging into overflowing platters of oysters, mussels, lobster and more ultra-fresh seafood. Service can feel torturously slow, but the waitstaff ferries drinks briskly. The short but spectacular list goes heavy on California wines and obscure Belgian brews. Call ahead for reservations, or risk waiting an hour plus on weekends.

My favorite restaurant. Ever. For now.

"Hands down, my favorite restaurant in the entire city. It’s the dining version of the perfect storm: Exquisite seafood; stylish but relaxed ambience; and a beer list, packed with obscure French Canadian and Belgian brews, to die for. The crudo is a must, these velvety, buttery slice of fish come topped with everything from caviar to juicy orange slices and practically melt in your mouth. The seafood platter is loaded with ultra-fresh clams, oysters, mussels and crabs. Even the hot plates, like the seared dayboat scallops, arrive perfectly prepared and presented. I could spend hours upon hours eating and drinking my way through everything the menu has to offer. My only quibble is slow service. But at least the servers are sweet and friendly, and they deliver drinks fast. The dining room (the only place I’ve ever sat) is also really small, don’t try to come here with a big group. Rather, come on a date or a double date at the most."
