The Slanted Door, a contemporary Vietnamese restaurant, had simple beginnings in the Mission District, but it’s gone downtown and swish in designer Olle Lundberg’s Scandinavian-modern quarters in the renovated Ferry Building, currently San Francisco’s best address for food vendors and restaurants. It occupies a prime spot on the Bay. Happily the cuisine is just as delicious as it was in the old modest location, and the menu remains much the same. It reads much like a traditional Vietnamese menu, with spring rolls, barbecued pork ribs, green papaya salad and lemongrass chicken. But the freshness and brightness are ramped up, as if the kitchen ran out to get the best ingredients, cooked them over the hottest fire and rushed them to the table. Platters brim with the salads and noodle dishes, and people tend to dig in family style. The clay pots steam with an irresistible aroma when you life the cover. You’ll also find some entrees leaning to Western tastes, such as Niman Ranch steak with baby leeks, and free-range rack of lamb with crispy potatoes. But seasonings are true to Asia, including tamarind sauce and Thai basil. The Slanted Door operates from lunch through dinner daily with tea service in the afternoon.
