Summary of Velvet Cantina
You wouldn’t be the only person to wonder if the Mission really needed another Mexican restaurant, but Velvet Cantina has proven its staying power. Girls in skinny jeans and guys in indie-rock T-shirts pack the tables and roomy, circular booths under colorful murals that spin the neighborhood’s history. Pitchers of fruity, frothy margaritas pack some serious punch, but generous portions of burritos, enchiladas and nachos do a fine job of soaking up the tequila. The menu offers traditional fare with a Nuevo Latino twist – chicken enchiladas get amped up with organic meat and a kicky jalapeno cream sauce; burritos arrive topped with a rich corn chili sauce – but the overall vibe is ultra-casual and unpretentious. More than just a dinner-and-date spot, Velvet Cantina lures bar hoppers with a late-night happy hour (11 p.m.-2 a.m.), when margs go for $3. Sweet tooth? Don’t miss the peanut butter chocolate tamale.
