Caviar and champagne at eight in the morning, oysters and Sancerre at eight at night. Food lovers never lack temptation at the cavernous, light-filled Ferry Building Marketplace. It’s an old-fashioned, European-style food hall, housed in the former 1898 Ferry Building. Once every form of San Francisco’s public transportation converged here. After many years of decline, it’s taken on new life with this transformation to a marketplace. People once again converge to shop for food and dine in one of four restaurants, including uber popular Slanted Door. You can also pick up a shake and maybe the best burger in town at Taylor’s Refresher, a cup of lapsang souchong at Imperial Tea Court, or amaretto gelato cone at Ciao Bella. Picking up supper or a picnic lunch is popular — bread from Acme Bakery, artisan cheese at Cowgirl Creamery, peaches from Frog Hollow Farm and chocolates from Recchiuti Confections. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, the food stalls spill out of the building for the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market. The market brings in growers from the surrounding area to sell vegetables, fruits, eggs, meat and fish only hours away from the fields, pastures and streams.

A good spot to see on your trip, but not essential

NOLAgirl's rating:

"We visited here in April, 2007 and found tasty, over-priced food, as everyone else has said. It did seem very touristy, but I can see why people go, and I do recommend it. The reason I can't give it a 5 for my rating is that San Francisco is just such a great city to be walking around and exploring outdoors, that I can't recommend anything that'll keep you inside for too long. Definitely stop through for a break if you are out exploring!"

The cavernous, light filled building...

"To some this is light filled and cavernous, to others, it’s European and old fashioned. Whatever you think of the palce, it’s been in San francisco a long time, and has survived more than a couple transformations. I like the bread house, because there’s nothing like fresh bread and wine to take back to the Bay behind the marketplace. I also like the dark chocolate at Recchiuti Confections. It’s because I can’t just see the good chocolate there, and leave it alone. I want to buy it. Whether you are a tourist enjoying your stay in the area, or someone close to being alocal, including the locals, this is a great place to go. Do note, it’s a little pricey, but everything there is of fine quality, adn worth the penny saving you may be doing to afford all you want here."

One of SF's gems

Anonymous' rating:

"Yes, it’s an overpriced yuppie food court. Yes, it’s perpetually teeming with tourists. And yes, the parking rates are beyond ridiculous. But the Ferry Building Marketplace still holds a special place in my heart. Maybe it’s the gorgeous setting on the Bay. Or the tasty oysters and cold pints at Hog Island. Or the rich, creamy milkshakes at Taylor’s Refresher. Or the free samples of cheese at Cowgirl Creamery. Or the friendly, unpretentious service at the Wine Merchant. Despite the parking hassle and high prices, the Ferry Building is one of those places that makes me feel lucky to live in San Francisco. A must see for any visitor (or resident, for that matter)."

A food lover's dream!

"This is the high holy temple of culinary delight. From the fresh fruits and veggies, to the organic meats and fishes, to the wine, champaign and even mushrooms, this place rocks! Don’t miss out on trying one of the great restaurants there either. My favorites are Slanted Door and Taylor’s Automatic Refresher. This place is a Pike’s Market done right."
