Quite a few hotels in Los Angeles can boast century-long luxury pedigrees, but few are as grand (or as ideally located) as the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica. The hotel is dramatically situated above Santa Monica beach, at the convergence of Wilshire Boulevard and the Pacific Ocean. The Miramar Hotel was built in the early 1920s, when Santa Monica was a popular vacation locale for jet-setting celebrities. Over the years it continued to host several U.S. presidents and foreign dignitaries (not to mention Marilyn Monroe, Barbra Streisand and Steven Spielberg). The hotel’s location near the Santa Monica Pier and the Third Street Promenade makes it a highly desirable place to stay. The Fairmont Miramar Hotel offers three exceptional locales: the historical Palisades wing, the recently renovated Ocean Tower (with fabulous views of the beach and ocean) and the spectacular private garden bungalows. Décor ranges from stylish Colonial rooms to beautiful tropical-themed suites and bungalows. Dine at the Grille or sip cocktails in the lobby’s charming Koi Pond Lounge.

Loved It! Loved It!! Loved It!!!

"My husband and I stayed here in the summer of 2004. We orginally checked into a room in the tower (which had a great view), but found out that there was an open bungalow and decided to splurge. The Bungalow made our small trip to Santa Monica incredible. The room was beautiful!! We did not want to leave. This room had a huge oversized tub and very cute fenced in patio with a table and chairs. This made for great room service because we were able to eat outside in privacy yet take in the people watching (the hotel courtyard is in the middle of the bungalow’s and this is also where the outdoor cafe is. The room also had spa products which you could use and it would be added to your room. The bubble bath was wonderful and because I liked it so much, I had to order some online as soon as I got home. Now, I do have a few small complaints…the service at the restaurant (the outdoor/indoor one) was always very SLOW. So don’t expect it to be quick. We stayed there for five nights and it was like this everytime we ate there which was once a day. Also, my husband got me a surprise package (champagne, strawberries, etc…) and when we got to the room….no package. He paid for it and they completely forgot about it. I felt pretty bad for him because he kept saying “I have a surprise for you once we get there!” Well, no surprise. They did end up giving it to us at no charge, though, for the inconvenience. The location was superb….five minute walk to the beach. Five minute walk to the shops downtown. If you know Santa Monica, there are many places to eat and shop and this is probably the hotel with the best location to get them. If we go to Santa Monica again, we will definitely be staying here!"

Great Hotel in Santa Monica

Reviewed by Gustonian on April 27, 2006

Gustonian's rating:

"My wife and I have stayed here a few times, and the location is hard to beat. Most rooms have a great view of the ocean, which you can walk to easily, and the Third Street Promenade is just a few blocks away too. We stayed in this hotel while we were searching for a place to live in Santa Monica, and at that time the service was great (2003). We ended up moving a few blocks away from the hotel, and I ended up using the lobby as my own personal meeting room for friends and clients. We made our way back to the Fairmont a couple of years later, and found the hotel staff to be less friendly. We will probably give them another shot because it is a great hotel, but only one more try. Watch for an update from me on this hotel."

Great Location Not Helpful with Guest Needs

Reviewed by Amy on March 13, 2006

Amy's rating:

"I stay at this hotel when in Santa Monica for the location. It is very comfortable and it is right by the beach, the park and shopping. My problem is the concierge. Any question beyond which restaurant we should eat at is met with a complete lack of help. They don’t know the community. I have traveled here with my two small children and was unable to get a recommendation on a place to find a stroller. They even sent me to a store that had been closed for over six months. When I stopped by the desk to let them know about this they only shrugged and said oh. No apology or offer to help me find another place. I am not a high maintenance guest, but once in a while I have a question. They were also unable to point me in the direction of somewhere to buy sunscreen when they were out at the small store within the hotel. I would expect a hotel on the beach to know were guests can buy sunscreen. My small needs turned into big ordeals because of their lack of basic community knowledge."
