Barrington, Canada Summary
Barrington photo

There’s not much to delay you on the 100-kilometre journey west from Shelburne to Yarmouth, but you should make a brief stop at minuscule BARRINGTON, where the Old Meeting House (June to mid-Sept Mon-Sat 9.30am-5.30pm, Sun 1-5.30pm; donation), with its simple wooden pews and severe pulpit, reflects the intellectual rigour of the Nonconformist settlers who migrated here from New England in the mid-eighteenth century. In its simplicity, it’s a beautiful building, which is more than can be said for the adjacent Lighthouse Museum (same hours; free), where a smattering of lightkeepers’ memorabilia is housed in a replica of the lighthouse that once stood on remote Seal Island – though this version stands on a hillside apropos of nothing in particular.
