As a town that’s produced many a Winter Olympian, Steamboat Springs is a great place to sharpen your skiing skills. You’ll have your choice of Mount Werner, Sunshine Peak, Storm Peak, Thunderhead Peak and Christie Peak. Experienced skiers love the glades of Sunshine and Storm peaks for the combination of loose powder and scenic trees. Steamboat has a distinctly western feel about it that contrasts with the cosmopolitan atmosphere of international ski destinations such as Aspen or Vail. The resort boasts a convention facility, excellent family ski programs with many day and evening activities for kids.
When you’re not skiing, you can snowboard, rent a snowmobile, go climbing or try cross-country skiing. At night, not all the action happens indoors. Although there are plenty of restaurants and bars in town, you can also take guided moonlight snow-shoe tours on the mountain or keep working on your downhill technique; night runs are possible three nights per week. If you’re not worried about making the Olympic team, you can relax in the hot springs downtown. Other activities include helicopter tours, hot air ballooning, the famous Steamboat gondola and sleigh rides. If you’re traveling with kids, you can keep track of them with Steamboat’s innovative MountainWatch service. Each family member wears a specially coded watch, and scanning stations throughout the area tell you whether the kids are at the half pipe or watching sports back in the hotel.
