Vail is the quintessential resort town that was first conceived from a blueprint in 1952. Located 123 miles west of Denver off I-70, Vail remains a village for the wealthy, with its tree-lined streets crowded with multimillion-dollar condominiums and chalets.
This is the largest ski resort in the country and has a year-round population of 3,900. The resort consistently ranks among the top five in surveys of American ski resorts.
One of Vail’s main drawing cards, Beaver Creek, offers exceptional powder terrain. There is also a heart-pumping bobsled run and other winter sports including ice-skating and backcountry and crosscountry skiing.
In summer, mountain biking and playing golf on the 18-hole course are the main outdoor activities in Vail. There is also a host of activities incorporating wilderness hikes, whitewater rafting, and kayaking along the Roaring Fork River. The trail to Ten Mile Canyon over Vail Pass is one of the most popular hikes. The beautiful landscape of the Holy Cross Wilderness Area has a challenging 12-mile trail, which incorporates its namesake granite peak.
The Colorado Ski Museum and Hall of Fame provides an insight into the resorts of the Rockies and of Vail’s inception. During the first week of March, Vail hosts the American Ski Classic. In July and August there is a series of symphony concerts.
Vail’s Eagle County Airport is nearby. There is also wellscheduled shuttle service from Denver International Airport, as well as bus service.
