"Christiania is the formerly free town where people could openly sell and smoke hash and marijuana, not pay taxes, and live with communist and hippie principles. The Danish government has been trying to get rid of Christiania from the beginning, and recently succeeded in stopping the open sales of drugs. The people living there are still resisting, though. They don’t pay all the taxes they’re supposed to, and they do everything they can to thwart the police who come regularly. Pusher Street, the street which used to be lined with stalls selling different kinds of marijuana (hard drugs are illegal in Christiania) is pretty much gone now. There were a few booths with hippie-type clothes and jewellry, but no drugs in sight! There are still cafes, cool graffiti, and stuff going on there a lot, so it’s still interesting to visit. But not quite as cool as when Pusher Street used to be filled with people buying and selling hash! Christiania’s Mission Statement: “The objective of Christiania is to create a self-governing society whereby each and every individual holds themselves responsible over the wellbeing of the entire community. Our society is to be economically self-sustaining and, as such, our aspiration is to be steadfast in our conviction that psychological and physical destitution can be averted.” Pictures from Christiania "
