The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is a favorite of children for one reason and one reason only: They’re allowed to wade in the memorial’s fountains. In a city notorious for hot and sticky summers, these cascading fountains are a powerful draw. The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is one of the newer memorials in D.C. Opened in the spring of 1997, the memorial includes four outdoor galleries (one for each term of FDR’s marathon presidency) and plenty of water. Some of the memorial’s magnificent sculptures and bas reliefs feature the president in a wheelchair. The decision to depict FDR in a wheelchair was not without controversy (he strenuously avoided being seen in his chair), but is a victory for disabled Americans. Walking to the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial can be just as much fun as getting there: The memorial is set along the world-famous Cherry Tree Walk. Visit in spring, and you may be able to enjoy the breathtaking sight of the blooming cherry trees.
