One of Washingtons newest memorials, the Korean War Veterans Memorial pays tribute to the many who fought in the Korean War. Located near the Lincoln Memorial, this monument features statues of 19 soldiers carefully making their way through unknown terrain. Photographic images on a 164-foot granite wall pays tribute to the thousands of others who contributed to the war—nurses, mechanics, crew chiefs and support personnel. Inscribed on the wall are the words: “Freedom Is Not Free.”

A sad, peaceful place

"When you see the photographic images all over the vetrans war memorial, it brings a sense of either nostalgia or tears to your eyes. My tears started flowing after I saw this wall. All I can say is, go see it for yourself. It may not be the happiest moment in your life, but you can pay your respects to those departed and remember a bit of history, as it passed through our lives. Not too far from there, was “a tomb of an unknown soldier”, and my aunt said she never saw it when she was there. For the life of me, since I had wondered through the tour myself, alone, I don’t know where I saw it either. if anyone has seen this tomb besides me, and knows where it’s at, just give me a holler. My favorite DC memorial

"This is my favorite memorial in DC. The level of detail in each statue is incredible – they are so life like. It’s interesting to look at each one individually or all 19 as a whole with the wall in the background. It always seems a little less crowded than the other memorials on the Mall, but it is very close to the Lincoln Memorial and well worth a visit. It’s simply a very moving memorial."

Moving Monument to Veterans

fleminem's rating:

"I was fortunate enough to visit this memorial on the night of its dedication as a young student and the sight of it moved me to tears. The memorial is artfully arranged to make you feel as though you are on the ground with these brave men and the effects of the lighting at nighttime only contribute to the eeriness. This is one of my favorite memorials in the city."
