Located at the west end of the National Mall, the Lincoln Memorial is a principal landmark of the city. It offers magnificent views of the city from several vantage points. Daniel Chester Frenchs 19-foot statue of Lincoln seated and deep in thought, along with the carved text of the Gettysburg Address, provides a glimpse into a weighty period of American history. The 36 Doric columns represent the number of states in the union at the time of Lincolns death. Go at night for much lighter crowds. Admission is free.

Magnificent

am-van's rating:

"Nothing makes one realize the true majesty of this nation as much as the Lincoln Memorial and its surrounding views. What a wonderful monument to one of this nation's finest Presidents. Approaching the Memorial is visually stunning, but looking at the view of the National Mall from the steps of the Memorial is truly amazing. It is very crowded, for good reason, so plan to go early in the morning or later in the evening. And bring a good camera."

"This is one of the memorials you don't want to miss. The view down the Mall is great. It is also close to the Korean and Vietnam Memorial. Lots of steps."

Slice of history

"Worth a stop as you make you way through the typical tourist spots in the city. Grandiose memorial. Great views of the area. While most people know what it looks like from pictures and history books, etc, nothing can substitute for seeing it in person"

The Gettysburg address you don't want to pass up.

"I got to pose as Lincoln stting down halway, in a pretend chair, on a whim, right in front of this statue. Yes folks, I was having the time of my life in DC. It was the Bay Area 20 something on the loose. The statue, when you see it, it is so austere, yet so elegant. it just simply takes people’s breaths away. Presindet Lincoln was such a prominent figure to so many people. My Senotor’s assistant friend and I went near dusk. A tip, there are a lot les crowds near dusk, and you can avoid a lot fo extra people wanting to see the same statue as you if you come later. besides that, it’s just a much prettier time to gaze into the statuesque eyes of Lincoln. So if you happen to be tourind Washington DC any time soon, do stop by here. It’s worth your time."
