Located in the National Mall, the Sackler Gallery makes up one half of the national museum of Asian art, along with its companion, the Freer Gallery. During the winter months, you can travel between the Sackler and the Freer via an underground tunnel/exhibition room. If you dig Himalayan Cholo bronzes and Sasanian silver works (two points for knowing where “Sasania” is), you’ll want to visit the Sackler. The museum’s unique entrance leads you through a pyramid and three stories below ground, where you’ll find a diverse collection of sculpture, painting, and objects d’art. This gallery is part of the Smithsonian Institution, so you can check out the fourth-century Biblical manuscripts and still have time left over to see Fonzie’s jacket. Back above ground, the National Mall is a great place to people-watch, frisbee toss or have a picnic lunch. Collections include manuscripts and artwork from the Bible and Koran; beautiful Chinese, Japanese and Korean master works; Egyptian statues; Iranian sculptures; and the best Rajput paintings this side of Chittorgarh.

The Arthur M. Sackler gallery is home to a vast collection of Asian art.
