Arts and Industries Building
900 Jefferson Drive SW
Washington, DC 20560
202-357-2700
After its opening in 1881, President Garfield partied down at the Smithsonian’s Arts And Industries Building for his Inauguration Ball. You may not be able to visit the inside of this Victorian style masterpiece (it’s closed for renovations), but you can admire its truly awesome exterior. Designed by Cluss and Schulze, the Arts and Industries Building is the second oldest of the Smithsonian’s 17 D.C.-based museums. Geometric patterns of red, blue, black, and beige bricks, combined with numerous arched windows, give the original home of the National Museum an eye-catching exterior. Located within the Smithsonian Institution on the National Mall, the Arts and Industries Building is just a short distance from the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol Building. Families with kids can catch a show at the nearby Discovery Theater, and pop-culture addicts can lose themselves among the Smithsonian’s 140 million-plus cultural artifacts.
