Summary of Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
In a city filled with giant marble masterpieces designed in a kaleidoscopic blend of over-the-top, pre-20th century architectural styles, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden is refreshingly modern. When your head is swimming with Beaux-Arts cornices and big, bronze statues, the Hirshhorn’s simple, cylindrical beauty is quite inviting. Its collections are just as strikingly modern as its design: After all, the Hirshhorn is the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art for the Smithsonian Institution. In addition to its ever-changing exhibitions, look for works by masters like Brancusi, as well as modern masters like Christo. Whatever the weather, be sure to pop into the terrific Sculpture Garden. It includes more than 60 large sculptures by artists as esteemed as Auguste Rodin. Although you’ll have to bundle up to visit the Garden during snowy winter days, it’s worth it: The sculptures look eerily beautiful under a dusting of snow. The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden is located downtown, on the National Mall.
