Like no other museum you’ll visit in D.C., the International Spy Museum keeps kids – and adults — engaged with its interactive and technology-driven exhibits that not only trace the sordid history of espionage but also allow the kid in you to climb into air ducts and spy on people below, adopt a fake identity, and participate in scavenger hunts and undercover missions. See Cold War accoutrements that would make Sidney Bristow proud, including the “Kiss of Death,” a 4.5 mm single-shot pistol disguised in a lipstick tube, or the KGB coat with a buttonhole camera. One of the city’s most popular tourist destinations, the International Spy Museum is always busy, whether high tourist season or not, so be prepared to weather the crowds (plan to get tickets in advance) and spend a couple hours going through the impressive, privately held exhibit.

Crowded and Disappointing

Reviewed by skbreads on April 25, 2007

skbreads' rating:

"I ordered my tickets in advance online ( a good idea!). This is not part of the NPS and the cost is significantly higher. It was very crowded, but I was there during the Cherry Blossom Festival. There are many interactive stations that would have been fun if it wasn't so crowded. I felt it needed to be updated. The "Secret Stuff" seemed to have stopped about the microdot film era. I would put this on the lower part of my list of things to do in DC unless you have a child who is really interested in spies."

I spy...

komodokd's rating:

"The spy museum is great for both kids and adults. When you enter the museum you are told to pick an alias and memorize some details. In the next room you are quizzed on your alias identity. There are plenty of interactive exhibits. The most popular one is the air duct. You have to crawl through it and try to not make noise. I found the most interesting exhibits to be the exhibits on coding and secret messages. The spy cameras are also great to look at. YOu would be surprised to see how many different objects could hide a camera."
